World Cup 2022 tournament format

The format for the group stage of the 2022 World Cup will be the same as that of recent tournaments. There will be 32 teams competing in the stage, and only the top two teams from each of the tournament's eight groups will advance to the knockout stage.

These 16 teams from the group stage will continue to the single-game knockout phases, which include the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. In each step, the winner advances while the loser is eliminated from the competition. Every match in the knockout phase must have a victor on the day it is played, and if that is not possible, the match will continue for an additional period or go to penalty kicks to decide the winner.
